Business Life Lately
Losses
Lost A Key Employee For Our Recruiting Company
I got the “Hey, do you have 5 minutes to talk?” Slack last Monday at 10 AM.
I’ve been building ConstantHire for the last 6 months. We have had 2 full time recruiters on our team and one just put in her 2 weeks.
All personal reasons, but it still stings nonetheless.
We have been growing revenue every month since we started. And I’m a firm believer that momentum is everything when running a company, so need to bounce back quickly.
Tariff Concerns For Our Recruiting Company
We were days away from signing $80,000+ in new business for ConstantHire. When all of the sudden I saw this:

Tariffs of 30%+ on goods coming from China.
All of our customers are 8 & 9 figure e-commerce brands.
They buy a lot of stuff from China. 🙂
We were supposed to kick off 3 new searches for an Operations Manager, President & E-commerce manager role.
But with the latest tariff announcement, companies are scared.
Companies don’t hire when they are scared.
Most small businesses can’t stomach a 20-100% increase on their costs (hell, no business can). So now brands have no idea if they should be following their 2025 growth plan or think about laying people off.
It’s going to be a tough couple of months selling physical items made outside of the US.
Wins
Q1 Record Sales For Our Ecom brand
Q1 is our slow season but we broke $1,000,000 in sales for the first time ever! (up 7% YoY)
Here is what worked:
Launched new products with high Average Order Values
Relentless creative testing on Facebook ads (we signed 2 new creative strategy agencies)
Spending more money on those Facebook ads.
I don’t know how to double this business anymore.
But we have a lot of great 10-15% YoY growth ideas.
But April is already up 30% at the time of this writing. 🤞
New Property Closing For Atlas Self Storage
Finally bought a damn property in the state that I live in.
Kingston, NY baby!
The first capital in NY state until freaking Albany came into the picture.
Here are the details on the deal:
$1,540,000 purchase price
$300,000 down
Seller financing $1,240,000 for the next 5 years, interest only @ 5.25%
In place revenue today $16,000
Year 1 stabilized revenue $22,000 w/ no additional build/upgrades
Year 5 has us getting to $30,000/mo with minor rent increases and minor expansion
Not so fun fact: The is the first property we needed to hire an attorney on to force a sale after the seller tried to back out 2 weeks before closing.

PS – Shoutout Gio for using AI to test out new Paint ideas (and Lego Expansion)

Upcoming Travel
April & May are the best times to be in NYC, so I’m pretty locked down here for the next 2 months soaking that in. And I’m super happy about that.
If you are around and want to grab a coffee/sauna/life, let me know.
Otherwise my next plane ticket is…
Upcoming Travel![]() | Bonnaroo Music Festival🌉 When: June 12-15 👋 Hit me up if you’re there! 📣 Shoutout Tom Worcester for planning all of the logistics for his 30th. |

New Things
More Creatine:
Growing up I always thought Creatine = Steroids.
At least, that’s how people talked about it in my high school locker room.
But lately I’m seeing a lot of posts about the cognitive benefits that come from 10-15 grams of creatine supplementation.
It’s like drinking coffee all day long without the crash.
I’m 2 weeks in. And it could be placebo, but I think it works.
That said, I can’t stand downing it. It’s gritty and definitely upsets my stomach, so test at your own risk!
Diet:
If you were sitting in 17B on a flight 2 weeks ago, you probably thought the guy next to you eating out of a tupperware filled with 3 hard boiled eggs and 1 cut up steak was a psychopath.
Well, that was me.
Summer cut is HERE.
I started dieting on March 16th because my property manager Rachel told me she was doing Whole30 and I wanted to try it. Now I’m 3 weeks in at the time of this writing.
It’s fairly simple. I only eat real foods. And I workout daily.
I’m down 7.5 pounds right now and it doesn’t feel that hard…
What is CRAZY is you start to realize how often you’re not actually hungry, you just are bored or stressed and turning towards crappy food to alleviate that.
Hampton Entrepreneurs Org:
Single folks have Hinge. Athletes have run clubs.
Well I wanted to meet business owners in NYC.
So I signed up for this community called Hampton.
So far it’s OK. It’s probably too expensive, but I’ve seen first hand that meeting 1 person can have infinite ROI.
I’ve only been to 2 events. They pair you with a core group which meets monthly. I meet mine for the first time at the end of April.
It reminds me how much I love being around others who are building things though, and like all things in life, I think the more I put into it, the more I’ll get out of it.

Other Thoughts
Why I’m writing these emails:
I want a creative outlet.
I really resonate with my friend Zach’s Mantra: Entrepreneur. Athlete. Artist.
The first 2 come naturally. I build companies and I like to lift/run & train sports intermittently. But nothing to scratch the creative itch.
Does a personal blog count as art? Eh, probably not.
But I won’t be writing sci-fi novels anytime soon and pottery isn’t really my thing. So for now, it’s writing and these silly little doodles.
4 great things from this past month:
🎧 Awesome Set: Sidepiece DJ Set. This has been on loop for me both at the gym and when working these last 4 weeks. S/o Ben Bradbury for sharing.
🍿 Broadway Show: I saw Glengary Glenn Ross on Broadway with Sarah last month – it has Bill Burr, Kieran Culkin & James McGill in it. The dialogue was 10/10.
💪 Pull Ups: I’m doing so many with these Hooks I bought on Amazon. $30 and they let you burn out your lats way more when your grip is usually the first thing to give out.
📚 Option Rot: This is the best article I read in March.
Till next time,
